Modica
A Baroque fortress in the Province of Ragusa, in 2002 Modica became a UNESCO world heritage town due to the extraordinary value of the monuments in its historic centre. A place with a medieval atmosphere criss-crossed by narrow streets and alleys, picturesque houses – some even carved into ancient grottoes – stairways winding up the hill slopes, a forest of bell towers, and picturesque views in pastel shades of colour. Its many churches are impressive: they include the Cathedral of San Giorgio, that of San Pietro and the Church of Santa Maria del Gesù. Take a stroll through the rooms of the Palace of Culture, at one time a Benedictine Monastery, and don’t miss the view from the Castello dei Conti, perched on an impregnable rocky spur. Modica is the guardian of romantic stories and poetry, and in the early 20th century was home to Italian poet Salvatore Quasimodo; it also offers great food experiences – it’s one of the world capitals of chocolate.
