Catania
Catania, set on the eastern coast of Sicily, lies at the foot of the Volcano of Etna and is bathed by the sea. Transformed by the earthquakes which over the centuries have struck this part of the island – legend has it that no less than seven catastrophic episodes occurred - Catania remains a fascinating Baroque city: the Cathedral of Sant’Agata and the small and large churches and stately buildings such as the Palace of the Elephants – today seat of the Municipality, the University Palace and the San Giuliano Palace. But the pulsing heart of the city runs along Via Etnea, which crosses the city from Piazza del Duomo to the Tondo Gioeni and includes some of the most beautiful squares, heritage buildings, gardens and other sites of interest. The fascinating streets of the city centre are also the hub of its night life, with a host of typical restaurants, bars and watering holes ranging from stylish to casual. Then there is the sea, which bathes the 65 km of Catania’s coast, a host of splendid multi-hued bays and inlets, alternating with fine golden sands and basalt rocks, set against blue sea and sky.
